MONTREAL, CANADA — Bulgaria Air, the national airline of Bulgaria, has acquired its first Airbus A220.

This cutting-edge airliner was delivered from the Airbus facility located in Mirabel, Canada. The airline's new addition will serve on regional and international routes crisscrossing Europe. The current deal with ALC comprises a total of seven aircraft, including five A220-300s and two A220-100s.

Joining the ranks of Bulgaria Air's seven-strong Airbus A320 fleet, the A220 represents the latest generation of Airbus aircraft to bolster the airline's capabilities. With a reach of up to 3,450 nm (6,390 km), the A220 empowers carriers such as Bulgaria Air with enhanced operational flexibility.

The inaugural A220 for Bulgaria Air is designed with a dual-class, 143-seat configuration that includes eight seats dedicated for Business class passengers. Purpose-built for the 100-150 seat market, the A220 integrates state-of-the-art aerodynamics, high-tech materials, and Pratt & Whitney's most advanced engines.

Further underlining Bulgaria Air's commitment to the industry's ongoing decarbonization efforts, the A220 sets new efficiency benchmarks with 25% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat than its predecessors. Furthermore, it produces 50% less NOx emissions than industry norms. The aircraft also significantly minimizes noise pollution, cutting the noise footprint by half compared to previous-generation models.

As of May end, 2023, Airbus has notched up almost 800 orders for the A220 from 30 different customers, with 265 of these having been delivered. Already in operation with 16 airlines globally, the A220 has served over 90 million passengers on more than 1,100 routes to over 375 destinations worldwide.
