BANGKOK, THAILAND — On May 5, a man wielding an ax and pointing a gun at airport staff pursuing him caused chaos in Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

As it was seen on the video footage, the man wildly swung the ax at airport personnel and pointed a gun at them. It turned out to be a replica firearm. The intruder was finally suppressed near an airbridge and subdued by the airport security.

Local Police said the 34-year-old man, Wachara Khambutr was high on drugs during the assault.

“I can assure everyone that Suvarnabhumi airport maintains its internationally accepted standard of security, and security guidelines were followed,”

Airport general manager Kittipong Kittikachorn said.

The assailant faces charges of damaging property, drug possession, carrying weapons, and threatening airport safety.

Airport authorities said a detailed review of security protocols is underway at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
