The Denver-based low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is expanding its nonstop services to three new cities in California. The airline announced Tuesday that in February it would start operating direct flights between Phoenix and Oakland International Airport, Ontario International Airport and Sacramento International Airport.

The flights to Oakland will start on Feb. 4 and operate twice a week until March 11, then they will operate four days a week. The Ontario and Sacramento flights will both start on Feb. 11 and will also operate twice a week until March 11, then they will switch to four times a week. The carrier has also added flights between Oakland, Denver, and Las Vegas.

The new service will operate seasonally and the frequency of flights will change based on the time of year. Frontier has kicked off the launch with a new promotion offering $19 flights between February and May 2021.

“We’re proud to add Oakland to our route map with new flights to Denver, Las Vegas, and Phoenix starting February 4th,” Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial for Frontier Airlines, said in a statement. “Offering convenience for area residents, California’s fourth-largest airport in Oakland, combined with Frontier’s low fares, is an unbeatable combination. Frontier is committed to protecting the health and safety of our customers on every flight and this new service will adhere to Frontier’s highest health standards, including enhanced cleaning, temperature screenings for all passengers, and required mask-wearing.”

The addition of Frontier as Oakland International Airport's newest carrier comes after American Airlines, one of the largest domestic airlines in the Bay Area and throughout the country, made its official exit from Oakland on Oct. 1.

Meanwhile, American Airlines Group will launch a new nonstop seasonal service to two Baja California destinations — La Paz and Loreto — from Phoenix beginning in December.

Frontier, which is owned by Phoenix-based private equity firm Indigo Partners, is the latest airline to announce new flights from Phoenix. Last month, Southwest Airlines announced the addition of nonstop service between Phoenix and Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Colorado Springs starting the first quarter of 2021. Recently Southwest launched its first international service from Phoenix to two tourist destinations in Mexico.
