SHANGHAI, CHINA - A Boeing 777 Freighter from Ethiopian Airlines has caught fire at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport while it was being loaded with cargo.

The Boeing 777 with registration ET-ARH was supposed to carry out a scheduled cargo flight from Shanghai Pudong to Sao Paulo, and Santiago respectively.

Videos and photos on social media show a large part of the freighter’s aft section burnt away.

Ethiopian confirmed that the fire has been contained and all ground staff and flight crew are safe. The African carrier operates 10 Boeing 777Fs, with an average age of 4.3 years.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. The company said it has been working with the local authorities to investigate the incident.
