Chicago, Illinois, U.S. - United Airlines has exercised options for seven Boeing 787 jets. The new Dreamliners are expected to join the United's fleet in 2021.

The airline currently has ten Boeing 787-9s and two Boeing 787-10s on firm order from Boeing of which ten are due to deliver by the end of 2020. One Boeing 787-10 was already delivered in April 2020. The airline did not disclose the exact variant for newly firmed up options.

United also plans to consolidate its network, including its operating bases. The 787 base at Los Angeles International will temporarily be closed.

United currently operates twelve Boeing 787-8s, 29 Boeing-9s, and 13 Boeing 787-10s.

The US carrier aims to operate its long-haul routes mainly with its Boeing 787 during the post-crisis recovery phase.
