Perth, Australia - Perth Airport has seized several Virgin Australia aircraft because of the airline's unpaid bills of 16 million Australian dollars. The airport blocked the way of a Boeing 737 jet with a pushback truck.

It is questionable whether it is really necessary, but according to the Airport officials, it is a standard procedure in such situations. Virgin Australia filed for bankruptcy protection early this week. Airline management is now looking at how the company can be saved. The domestic flight operations of the airline still even from and to Perth.

Virgin Australia is currently the world’s largest airline to seek bankruptcy protection since the coronavirus outbreak paralyzed many activities, including global air travel.

Virgin Australia owed 5 billion Australian dollars ($3.2 billion) and hadn’t posted a profit in the last seven years. Virgin Australia had asked the Australian government for an AU$1.4 billion emergency loan, but the government refused, partly through fears that the money could be transferred to financially stressed foreign airlines that own Virgin.
